Headed to a family gathering for July 4th next week and wanna bring some good stuff with me. Its about a 6 hour drive crossing 2 state lines. Ive got mostly 1.4G stuff – cakes, roman candles, fountains – nothing crazy.
Whats the actual legal way to do this? I know technically transporting fireworks across state lines can be iffy depending on the states involved. I dont want to get pulled over and have some cop make a huge deal out of it.
Is it better to keep everything in the trunk? Unopened boxes? Anyone ever had issues at a checkpoint or anything?
Steve the short answer is – check the laws of EVERY state youre driving through. Some states like MA or NJ are really strict even about 1.4G. Others are fine.
General practical advice:
– Keep everything in original packaging, unopened if possible
– Put it in the trunk – not the passenger cabin
– Dont have anything illegal in the state you start in or end in
– If you get pulled over, dont volunteer that you have fireworks. Only mention it if they ask
– Keep receipts if you bought them legallyIve driven through like 10 states with fireworks and never had an issue, but I also dont speed and my car doesnt look suspicious. Some guys have horror stories though so YMMV.
Worth checking the Transport section of the forum for state-by-state breakdowns, theres some good threads there.
Gonna second what Ron said about checking each state. I made that mistake once – bought a bunch of stuff in PA, drove through NJ to get to a beach house. NJ state troopers are NO JOKE about fireworks. Didn’t get pulled over myself but had a friend who did and it was a whole mess.
If you can avoid driving through the strict states, route around them. Even if it adds an hour or two to the drive, its worth it for peace of mind.
And for sure keep it in the trunk. Out of sight is the #1 rule.
