So I’ve got about 15 cases of assorted 1.4G stuff left over from July 4th. Cakes, rockets, fountains, some Roman candles. My garage stays dry but it does get warm in the summer — probably hits 90+ on hot days. I’ve been keeping everything in the original cardboard boxes up on shelves away from the floor. But I keep hearing mixed things about whether a garage is even okay for storage. Some guys say as long as it’s dry and away from ignition sources you’re fine. Others say you need a dedicated magazine. What do you all do? Is a detached garage acceptable under NFPA regs or am I pushing it? I’m in Ohio if that matters for state laws.
I’ve been storing mine in a detached garage for years and never had issues. Key things imo: keep it off the concrete floor (get pallets or shelving), make sure there’s no pilot light or water heater in there, and don’t let it get direct sun through windows. NFPA 1124 says 1.4G can be stored in ‘ordinary residential storage’ as long as quantities are under 125 lbs net explosive weight. Most of us aren’t anywhere near that with leftover consumer stuff.
Jim’s right about the 125 lb limit under NFPA 1124. Most homeowners are well under that with consumer 1.4G. One thing I’ll add — make sure your garage doesn’t have any fuel-burning appliances inside (water heater, furnace, etc) because that’s an automatic no-go per code. And if you’re in Ohio specifically, check your county regs because some have stricter rules than the state.
