Been trying to figure out if it’s worth shipping a pallet of mixed 1.4G stuff from a supplier out of state rather than driving 12 hours round trip to pick it up. I’ve gotten quotes from like 3 different LTL carriers that say they handle hazmat and the numbers are all over the place ??from all the way up to for basically the same weight (around 1500 lbs).
Anyone here actually done this? What should I expect to pay for a pallet going maybe 800 miles? And do they charge extra for the hazmat paperwork or is that usually baked in?
Trying to figure out if the convenience of shipping is worth what feels like a total crapshoot on pricing.
I looked into this a few months back when I was thinking about splitting a container with a buddy. For LTL hazmat shipping within the US, – sounds about right for 1500lbs going 800 miles honestly. The big variable is how many stops they gotta make and if they can consolidate with other hazmat shipments.
One thing a freight broker told me ??ask if they’re doing ‘line haul’ or if it’s going through multiple terminals. Multi-terminal routes are cheaper but take way longer and your pallet gets handled more. Direct line haul is pricier but way less chance of damage.
Also check if the shipper has a hazmat compliance department. Some of these smaller LTL guys say they handle hazmat but their paperwork is a mess and it’ll get flagged.
Solid question. I’ve been in the industry for a while and I’ll tell you ??it really depends on who you’re shipping with and what class your stuff falls under. 1.4G is UN0336 which is hazmat Class 1, and not all LTL carriers actually want to deal with it even if they say they do.
Few things I’d add:
– Make sure they’re FMCSA registered for hazmat. Not all carriers are.
– Ask about ‘accessorial charges’ ??some hit you with fees for the hazmat paperwork (-150 extra)
– Weight matters less than cube. A 1500lb pallet that’s tall and bulky costs more than a dense one the same weightSpeaking of transport, there was a good discussion in the Rules section recently about what happens when stuff gets flagged at inspection. Might be worth a look if you’re new to shipping.
But yeah, -900 is unfortunately the range. You might find better rates if you can find someone else in your area who also orders from the same supplier and you split a full pallet.
