I am trying to arrange a pickup from a house (my garage basically) for a pallet of 1.4G that I am shipping to a buddy. Every carrier I called so far says they do hazmat but when I mention residential pickup they either hang up or quote me like double.
Is this normal? Do all hazmat carriers charge a residential surcharge or is there someone out there who actually does residential hazmat pickups without ripping you off?
Like I get it, a warehouse has a loading dock and a forklift. But I got a pallet jack and a driveway lol. Seems like there should be a middle ground here.
Yeah man residential hazmat pickup is always a pain. Its not even the carriers being difficult on purpose — most of their insurance policies flat out prohibit residential hazmat pickups unless theyve pre-approved it. The surcharge usually covers the extra liability and the fact that they gotta send a guy whos specifically trained for residential hazmat.
One thing that helped me — I started using a local freight terminal as my pickup address. Basically just rent dock space for a day at a nearby logistics warehouse. Costs like $50-75 but saved me hundreds on the residential surcharge. The carrier just drops the empty pallet there and you pick up the same way.
Worth looking into if you do this more than once.
The freight terminal trick is smart, I might try that. Another thing I found – some of the smaller regional hazmat carriers are way more flexible about residential pickups than the big national ones. I used a carrier called Apex out of Tennessee once for a residential pickup and they only charged like $75 extra instead of the $200+ the big guys wanted. Worth shopping around with local companies instead of just calling the ones that show up on Google first.
