Been thinking about opening a small seasonal stand in my town for next year. Nothing huge, just a tent or a small building that I run for a few weeks around the 4th and New Year’s. But I have no idea what kind of licenses or certifications I actually need.
I know it varies by state but is there like a baseline list of stuff every operator needs? Like do I need the ATF license thing or is that only for manufacturers? What about local permits, fire marshal approval, insurance – all that stuff.
I’m in Missouri if that helps. Anyone here run a stand before? What was the biggest headache getting started?
Missouri is actually one of the easier states to get set up in from what I’ve heard. You’ll need a state license through the fire marshal’s office and local business permits from the city/county. No ATF license needed for just retail – that’s for importers and manufacturers.
The biggest thing people overlook is insurance. You’ll want at least $1M in liability coverage minimum. Some towns require more. Also make sure you understand the storage requirements – you can’t just keep inventory in your garage usually.

Started mine about three years back, it really does depend on what state you’re in. Mine was a basic retail license + a health/safety inspection and that was it, but my buddy in a neighboring state needed a permanent bond and a bunch more paperwork. Definitely do your homework on your state’s ag/fire marshal office before you sink money in.
Also don’t sleep on the insurance part – a lot of the tent wholesalers won’t even talk to you without liability coverage. That caught me off guard at first.
