So my local tent just put up their pre-Labor Day stock and I’m standing there staring at like 30 different 500g cakes and honestly they all look the same to me. Nice box art, big claims on the label, but how do you actually tell what’s gonna be worth the money?
I’ve been burned before — bought a cake that looked great on the box, paid $60, and it was like 8 shots of disappointment. Meanwhile my buddy grabbed some no-name brand for $35 and it was amazing.
Is there any way to know before you light it? Like certain brands to look for, or stuff on the packaging that gives it away?
Honestly the best trick I’ve picked up is to google the cake name while you’re standing there in the tent. Most of the popular ones have youtube videos showing the actual performance. Way better than trusting the box.
Also look at the weight — heavier cakes usually mean more comp inside. Not always true but it’s a decent rule of thumb. And if the store lets you, check the tubes on the bottom. Thin flimsy tubes = cheap filler.
Yeah I’ve pretty much stopped buying cakes blind at this point. If I can’t find a demo video on YouTube I don’t touch it. Too many $70 disappointments lol.
That said, if you stick with the bigger brands like World Class or Brothers you’re generally safe. The smaller pop-up tents tend to stock whatever their distributor had left over which is sometimes the stuff nobody wanted.
One more thing — look for cakes that say “maximum load” or specify the gram weight per shot. The ones that just say “500 gram cake” but don’t break down the per-shot weight are usually padding the numbers.
