I was thinking about doing a small show at the local park for Labor Day but the town hall was vague when I called. They mentioned something about a “special event permit” but couldn’t tell me if fireworks specifically need an additional sign-off from the fire marshal.

Anyone dealt with this before? Is the fire marshal involved, or does the general event permit cover it? Mostly consumer stuff, nothing crazy.

Yeah in most places the fire marshal has to sign off. I did a show at a county fairground last year and needed both the venue’s permission AND a fire marshal inspection of the setup before they’d let us light anything.

Call your local fire department directly and ask, the town hall usually doesn’t know the specifics. Sometimes they’ll want proof of insurance too which can be a hassle if you’re just doing a small backyard-style show in a park.
