Planning a road trip to visit my brother next month and we thought about grabbing fireworks here and shooting off at his place across the border. Then it hit me ??is that even legal?
I know fireworks laws vary by state, but I’m not talking about selling them or anything commercial. Just a trunk full of 1.4G cakes and a few shells. Do you need any kind of permit, or is it just ‘don’t get pulled over in a no-fireworks state’ kind of deal?
Depends entirely on the states you’re driving through, honestly. 1.4G consumer stuff is legal to possess in most of the country, but a handful of states (Massachusetts, and some parts of the Northeast) outright ban it, and having it in your trunk counts as possession. De facto you’re not gonna get a permit ??there isn’t really a ‘transport permit’ for personal use ??it’s more ‘know the laws on your route and don’t speed in Ohio.’
The practical answer: check the ATF / state regs for each state you’ll pass through, keep it in the original packaging, and don’t cross into a ban state. If you’re just going one state over and both allow it, you’re almost certainly fine. Cross three states into New England and it gets dicey fast.

There’s no federal “transport permit” for personal consumer fireworks ??the key phrase is “know your route.” Each state sets its own possession rules, and some cities (hello NYC) have their own bans on top of state law, so it’s not even just the state line you need to watch.
