Hey all – random question that came up when I was talking to my neighbor after the 4th. He was asking if I needed some kind of permit to light off consumer stuff in my backyard. I told him I didn’t think so as long as it’s 1.4G and you follow local laws, but honestly I’m not 100% sure.
We’re in a suburban area, not inside city limits but there’s a county ordinance about fireworks. I usually just keep it to 500g cakes and fountains, nothing crazy. Anyone know if you actually need a permit for that, or is it only for the 1.3G display stuff?
Feels like every town has different rules which makes it confusing.
Depends on where you live honestly. There’s no federal permit needed for 1.4G consumer stuff on your own land – that’s the short answer. But city/county/HOA can all have their own rules.
Some counties require a burn permit if you’re in a fire risk zone, and a lot of cities have noise ordinances that kick in after 10pm regardless of permits. I shoot in unincorporated land and never needed anything, but a buddy of mine in a town 20 miles away has to get a $35 annual permit just for consumer grade.
Best bet is to call your local fire marshal’s office and ask directly. They’ll tell you straight up what you need.
Ron’s right about checking local ordinances. One thing I’d add – even where no permit is required, you still need to follow basic safety distances from structures and roads. There’s a good breakdown of the actual rules in the Rules & Regulations section here on the site if you wanna read up on the specifics.
Also worth noting that ATF just updated some storage requirements for 2026 that affect anyone buying in bulk. Even if it’s just consumer stuff, how you store it can get you in trouble if you’re not careful.
