I keep seeing people talk about buying wholesale to save money but tbh I have no idea what the legal requirements are. Is an ATF license only for 1.3G or do you need one to buy 1.4G wholesale too? Don’t wanna get on some government watchlist just for trying to save a few bucks on a case of Excaliburs lol.
Also if anyone’s done it – do most distributors even sell to individuals or is it strictly business-to-business?
Short answer – no ATF license needed for 1.4G consumer stuff, even wholesale. The license is for 1.3G (display fireworks). That said, a lot of distributors still won’t sell to you without a business tax ID. They wanna see you’re a legit retailer, not some guy in a parking lot reselling cases.
Some places are more chill about it than others. Where are you located? Makes a difference.
Ron’s right on the money. Just to add – if you’re looking at wholesale specifically for 1.4G, make sure you understand your state and local regs too. Some states require a separate state-level permit even for resale, even if the feds don’t care.
There’s a good thread in the Rules section that breaks down the whole 1.4G vs 1.3G licensing thing step by step – worth a look if you’re trying to figure out where the lines are.
