Was setting up for a back yard show the other night and tried to actually read the safety warnings on a 500g cake. Tiny print, dark background, and the font has to be like 6pt. I’m 40 with decent eyesight and I still had to squint under the garage light.
Is there some regulation on label legibility for consumer fireworks, or do they just cram everything on there to avoid lawsuits and not really care if anyone can read it?
It’s not just you. I swear the print gets smaller every year lol. The DOT warning text on the side is regulated enough to require certain wording, but the legibility standard is basically “does it technically appear on the label” — not “can a normal human read it in the dark.”
My trick is I just read everything on my phone with the flashlight before setup, or honestly do it in the daylight before the show even starts. Once it’s dusk and everyone’s had a beer, nobody’s reading a 6pt paragraph anyway.
I’ve honestly given up trying to read the fine print and just look for the big three: gram weight, the “with report” / “comets” description, and the manufacturer brand. If those are legible I’m good. The safety block is boilerplate anyway — “take outdoors, light and get away, don’t hold in hand,” we all know it.
Would be nice if they used the space better though. Half the warning panel is legal disclaimers that do nothing but cover the manufacturer.
