How do you actually fuse multiple cakes together, or is that something you should never try yourself?

So I keep seeing videos of people lining up 5-6 cakes and lighting one fuse that chains the whole thing into a mini show. Looks awesome but I have zero clue how safe that actually is.

Are you supposed to use a specific kind of fuse, or just tape the existing fuses together? And is this even legal to do with consumer 1.4G stuff if you’re just in your backyard?

Honestly just don’t tape fuses together and think you’re good. The visco on consumer stuff burns at different rates so your ‘chain’ will fire all over the place, not in order.

If you really wanna do it, get some quickmatch or slow visco and learn to cut/pike it right, and even then keep the gaps tight. Most people doing the fancy chains are using pro 1.3G gear anyway.

Jim’s right about the timing — the stock fuses are nowhere near precision. We’ve got a writeup in the Fireworks Guide section that walks through how consumer cakes are fused and why mixing your own visco gets sketchy fast, worth a read before you try anything.

Short version: for a backyard 1.4G show, you’re safer lighting cakes one at a time with a torch than trying to chain the whole board yourself.
