Trying to figure out realistic timelines for getting a container from China to the US. I know it depends on the port and all that but what are people actually seeing these days? I heard some shipments are taking 6-8 weeks from factory to doorstep but that seems kinda long. Is that normal or am I just getting bad info? Also does it matter if youre shipping to east coast vs west coast ports? Would love to hear from anyone whos actually done this recently.
6-8 weeks is about right honestly. Ive done a few container orders and the biggest variable is customs clearance honestly. West coast ports (LA/Long Beach) are faster but more congested. East coast via Savannah or NY takes longer transit but sometimes clears customs quicker. One thing nobody tells you is the paperwork — if your shipping docs arent perfect it can add weeks. Make sure your exporter knows what theyre doing with the HTS codes and all that.
The 6-8 week timeline is pretty standard yeah. Something else to factor in is Chinese holidays — if your order gets delayed around Chinese New Year it can stretch way longer. Theres some good info in the Transport section that breaks down the different shipping routes and typical delays. West coast is definitely faster but LA has been hit or miss with congestion lately. East coast via Norfolk has been surprisingly smooth from what Ive seen lately but you pay more in transit.
