Looking at maybe doing a group buy with some friends and we’re considering going straight to the port. I’ve heard everything from ‘just show ID and the BOL’ to ‘you need a broker, Importer Security Filing, customs bond, the whole nine yards.’
What does the actual pickup process look like? Anyone done it recently?
Done this twice now at LA/Long Beach. You’ll need: customs broker (they handle the ISF and entry), your bond, commercial invoice + packing list from the supplier, and the arrival notice from the shipping line. Most brokers also want an IRS Form 5106 if it’s your first time importing.
The actual pickup is the easy part — it’s all the paperwork BEFORE the container gets released that’s a pain. Also budget for pier pass and chassis fees, those add up quick.
