Tbh the cutoff thing bugs me less than the new permit fee ours added this year. Like $50 to shoot off legal 1.4G in your own yard on a holiday?

i do this every year lol. the week or two after the 4th is the best time to grab cakes, some places mark em 40-50% off to clear out. just keep the receipt and check the boxes aren’t beat up. my only rule is don’t buy anything where the packaging’s been opened, even if it’s cheap.

Depends a lot on whether you’re buying FCL (full container load) or LCL. LCL takes way longer cause they wait to consolidate your stuff with other cargo. If you’re going FCL it’s a lot more predictable. Also that 2-3 month number usually includes the supplier’s production lead time, not just shipping.

I lost a whole case of shells once to a humid shed. They still went off but some just kinda fizzled. Honestly the garage heat in summer is rough, if you got a basement or a closet inside the house, that’s way better. Dry and cool is the key, and keep ’em sealed in the original packaging.

The states that border each other usually have wildly different rules so there’s no one answer. Biggest gotcha is that just possessing a firework in your own car changes everything once you cross into a state where it’s banned — you can get hit with a fine and confiscation even for a sealed box. If you’re gonna do it, know the exact law for every state on your route, not just the destination.

For a 10 min backyard show, nah, don’t overthink it. Just stack in the order you want them to go and keep your reloads in labeled piles. Sorting by lift charge only matters if you’re timing to music or building a proper cue sheet.

dont sleep on the construction details either. a cake with more shots but thinner tubes is gonna feel weaker than one with fewer but fatter tubes, even at the same gram. lift charge matters way more than people think. worth watching a demo vid before you drop cash on a big case.

I’ve honestly given up trying to read the fine print and just look for the big three: gram weight, the “with report” / “comets” description, and the manufacturer brand. If those are legible I’m good. The safety block is boilerplate anyway — “take outdoors, light and get away, don’t hold in hand,” we all know it.

Would be nice if they used the space better though. Half the warning panel is legal disclaimers that do nothing but cover the manufacturer.

Danny I had the exact same question last year lol. What convinced me was watching comparison videos on YouTube — search for a specific cake name and there’s usually a demo. Some 200g cakes honestly punch above their weight class, especially the Z-shaped ones.

Also depends on your audience. If you’re doing a backyard show where people are sitting 50-100ft away, 200g is plenty. Bigger 500g stuff is better if you got the distance.

tbh i had the same problem with a batch from World Class this spring. some cakes the fuse burned instantly, others i swear i counted to like 12 Mississippi before anything happened.

I think it’s a factory QC thing, not storage. Visco fuse quality varies a ton between production runs and if they rush to fill orders (which they probably did after the America 250 demand), you get inconsistencies. Annoying but not dangerous, just makes choreographing a show harder.

Same in Ohio tbh. I managed to grab a case of Windas last month but they were literally the last box at the tent. The guy working said they couldn’t get restocked on 60g until after Labor Day.

Honestly the 200g cakes have been pretty decent this year though. The Golden Peacock stuff especially — not the same as a canister shell obviously but you get a lot of variety for the price. Might just do a cake-heavy show this Labor Day.

Just seeing this thread now. Has anyone actually gone through the whole process of ordering from China lately? I keep hearing about minimum order quantities being the biggest hurdle — like most suppliers won’t even talk to you unless you’re buying a full container load.

Curious if anyone’s found a workaround for smaller orders or if it’s basically FCL or nothing these days.

Quick add to the sea vs air thing – we did sea freight for our container and the real pain was the inspection holds. Saved a ton per case but waited nearly 6 weeks door to door. If timing matters to your show schedule, air is the call even at the higher price.
